You've found a flea on your dog. Chances are you have them in your home too. To be sure - make a flea trap. Take a baking tray and pour in a about a centimeter of water with a couple of drops of washing up liquid. Place a lighted tea light in the middle of the water and leave on the floor for a few hours. If you find fleas floating in the water then you know that you have a problem.
Vacuum your home very thoroughly and sprinkle a fine layer of ordinary table salt over your upholstery and carpets and leave overnight before vacuuming. The salt will desiccate and kill the fleas without you or your family and pets having to breathe in any toxic chemicals. Don't forget to empty your vacuum bag. Or try our new GET RID powder, suitable for use both in your home and on your pet. Get Rid is a natural product made from fossils and freshwater organisms and marine life crushed to a harmless powder which works by dehydrating fleas. Dust through your dog’s coat and sprinkle on their bedding and your soft furnishings.
Once you’ve had an infestation you’ll want to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. Farewell Fleaz is a herbal remedy added to dog food on a daily basis. It contains a blend of herbs including fenugreek, neem, peppermint, kelp, lemon balm, quassia and apple cider vinegar which work together to help prevent fleas and ticks.
You could also try making your own repellent using Scratch. Scratch is a combination of oils, tinctures and essential oils to relieve and prevent the discomfort of fleas and ticks and includes neem oil, grapeseed oil, lemon, grapefruit, orange, citronella, eucalyptus, cedarwood, sage and lavender essential oils. Soak a cotton wool ball in Scratch diluted 30 drops to 100ml water and wipe around the head avoiding the eyes before a walk. Alternatively wipe neat Scratch behind the ears, under arm pits and groins and around the base of the tail - just be careful to avoid delicate bits!
Relieve your dog with a bath in Itchy Dog Shampoo. It's a concentrated neem and coconut oil shampoo for deep cleansing and skin conditioning. Fleas don't like baths - although watch out that they don't all sit on your dog's head to avoid the water - and they hate the smell of neem.
Fighting fleas is an ongoing battle. One bath will not cure your problem as although you will have killed the live fleas, there will still be eggs in your home. That’s why you need to keep using Farewell Fleaz. Flea comb your dog daily to check for fleas and wash all pet bedding frequently. No flea ever survived a hot water cycle. If you add eucalyptus oil to the final rinse it will also kill 99% of house dust mites according to research from the University of Sydney, Australia.
